In addition to writing full time, I have also had the privilege of tutoring children in one-on-one writing lessons for several years now. This began during the Covid crisis when parents, children, and artists were all forced to adapt to a harrowing time and seek alternatives to traditional education. Even though the worst of that terrible pandemic is behind us, there might be many reasons why you'd be interested in signing your child up with a tutor. Maybe they're a budding artist, or you fear they're not receiving enough arts education in school. Maybe they struggle with writing and could use some coaching or just even a helpful nudge here and there.
I have a bachelors in Fine Arts and a masters in Creative Writing from The New School (fiction concentration). I've taught creative writing to more than a hundred middle schoolers in NYC through the Teachers & Writers Collaborative fellowship where I got my first taste of teaching.
One of my greatest joys was seeing a student become a published writer on Stone Soup. This year I had the honor of becoming a mentor for a young writer as part of Constellations - a tutoring collaboration between the Brooklyn Speculative Fiction Writers and the Octavia Project.
I typically hold classes online virtually, but if you live in the New York City area, I'm also willing to consider in-person classes. Most of my students are in the upper elementary, middle, and high school age range. I've now had students as old as nineteen.
If you're curious or interested, please do not hesitate to reach out to me to inquire about the particulars like pricing. I promise to be as flexible and accommodating as possible and I'm always eager for new pupils! Thank you.
best,
John
